Jersey Post & Go stamps to celebrate Battle of Flowers anniversary

A special overprint celebrating the 120th anniversary of the Jersey Battle of Flowers will be available on Jersey Post & Go stamps from 11 August 2022.

The overprint, which reads ‘Battle of Flowers’ will be available on Coastal Flowers stamps vended from both Jersey Post’s JE02 and JE03 Post & Go kiosks from 11 – 31 August 2022.

The Battle of Flowers is a two-day event, which takes place each year on the second Thursday in August. One of the largest floral carnivals in Europe, it sees a spectacular parade of colourful flower floats, accompanied by music and dancers, travel along Victoria Avenue on the south coast of Jersey, first by day, and then the next evening, festooned with lights.

The Battle of Flowers dates back to 1902, when Islanders decided to hold a flower parade in honour of the coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. This first event consisted of horse-drawn floats from which flowers were torn and thrown to the crowd. Spectators threw the flowers back and a ‘Battle of Flowers’ was born. Whilst the throwing of flowers stopped in the 1960s, due to concerns of safety, the Battle of Flowers, with its colourful floral floats, has remained a popular annual event.

Having been cancelled for the last two years, as a result of the global pandemic, this year the Jersey Battle of Flowers is back from 11 – 12 August, and celebrating its 120th anniversary.
