Seasonal greetings in Jèrriais for Jersey Post & Go

Seasonal greetings in both Jèrriais and English will appear as the two final overprints on Jersey Post & Go JE02 stamps this year.

The overprints will have the same meaning; the Jèrriais will feature on the Crest of Jersey stamps and the English translation will feature on the Jersey Flag stamps, reading Paix et jouaie and Peace & joy respectively. Both of the overprints will be accompanied by an icon of an angel. The overprints have been planned to coincide with the start of Jersey’s Fête dé Noué on Thursday 23 November 2017, and will be available from the JE02 kiosk until close of business on Wednesday 3 January 2018.

La Fête dé Noué heralds the start of the Christmas season in Jersey starting with the switching on of the Christmas lights in the island’s capital, St Helier. Translated from the old Norman-French language, Jèrriais, La Fête dé Noué simply means ‘Christmas Festival’. It is a time during which a series of events and activities take place around the island and French and Jersey market-traders tempt shoppers with special gifts and festive treats.

Melanie Gouzinis, Head of Philatelic at Jersey Post explains: “La Fête dé Noué is a great example of how islanders embrace their Norman-French heritage. Although not widely spoken, lessons in Jèrriais are available within the island and local government and businesses actively support the ancient language. We are delighted to be able to offer the same seasonal greeting in both languages during the festive period.”

The Broad Street location identifier will be printed on both the Crest of Jersey and Jersey Flag stamps, beneath the overprints.

Jersey Post’s JE02 series Post & Go kiosk, powered by Royal Mail, is located in Jersey Post’s Broad Street post office in St Helier. A limited number of Collectors’ strips featuring both the Jèrriais and English overprints will be available to order at www.jerseystamps.com or by contacting the Jersey Philatelic Bureau on: 00 44 (0)1534 616320.
